Pregnancy personal training in Walthamstow and Hertfordshire

Pregnancy is an incredibly special time, but it can be fraught, too. Your body changes so quickly, and your fitness needs and goals are ever evolving – it’s no surprise that many mums-to-be feel unsure about what’s safe to do and when, or whether you should even work out at all. And all those changes in your body can leave even confident exercisers unsure.

The challenges of pregnancy fitness

Physical changes such as high levels of the hormone relaxin make your body prone to injury, and doing the wrong kind of exercise (or simply sticking to your usual, pre-pregnancy workout) can increase your risk of pelvic floor dysfunction, diastasis recti, pelvic girdle pain and back, ligament and joint injuries. Not what you need when you’re getting ready to give birth!

On the other hand, safe pregnancy workouts can boost your energy levels, support healthy weight gain, help you feel strong and confident in your pregnant body, prepare your body for giving birth, reduce the risk of conditions like gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia, improve your sleep quality, and even support a shorter, smoother labour. Working out while pregnant is also great for your baby’s development. Plus, it’s brilliant for your mood and mental health.

The benefits of prenatal personal training

When you start researching safe pregnancy workouts or pregnancy exercise programs, you’ll quickly realise that you’re bombarded with confusing and contradictory advice. The NHS’s guidelines are old-fashioned, vague, and vary from hospital to hospital. Tiktok, Instagram and Google are filled with different (and often unqualified) content producers, each one telling you something different – as soon as you write an exercise down as “safe”, another source tells you the exact same exercise is to be avoided at all costs.

None of these routines are bespoke to your unique circumstances, pre-existing fitness levels, likes and dislikes, pregnancy aches and pains, and any health conditions you may already have or develop during pregnancy. I work with my pregnant clients to create a fun, flexible workout routine that is specific to your needs, takes your health and fitness levels into account, and includes exercises that specifically targets your pregnancy goals and symptoms, such as pelvic girdle pain, back pain, core weakness, fatigue and pelvic floor problems. And I continually review and update your programme every session, to make sure that it’s safe and beneficial for your changing body.

My qualifications as a pregnancy personal trainer

I’ve a Level 3 Diploma in Perinatal Exercise, meaning I’m fully qualified to provide specialist training to prenatal and postnatal clients. This is an intensive, in-depth course covering the science of pregnancy and postpartum, the physiological changes that take place over the antenatal period and how to design safe and effective exercise programmes for clients who are pregnant or have recently had a baby.

Don’t take a risk on a pregnancy personal trainer who doesn’t have the proper qualifications – this is an area where the safety of you and your baby is paramount. It’s not enough for a trainer to have real life experience, it’s essential to understand the science.
